A walk around the Krakow ghetto on 10 October 2007. This ghetto is very small and each inhabitant had only 2.2 sqm of living space. At its peak around 17,000 people were crammed into these few streets.
People were deported to the death camp at Belzec on 31 May - 7 June 1942 and again in October of that year. The ghetto was finally eliminated in March 1943 when those capable of work were taken to the Plaszów concentration camp nearby whilst 800 were deported to Auschwitz and gassed on arrival, the remainder being shot in the ghetto.
Oskar Schindler saved around 500 people - his list was much longer but many on it died before the war ended. Nonetheless this is a remarkable achievement as he managed by himself to save around three percent of the Jewish population of Kraków
